Plas y Brenin

The National Mountain Sports Centre of Wales — at the very heart of Eryri since 1955

At a glance

Plas y Brenin is the National Mountain Sports Centre of Wales at Capel Curig, offering expert-led courses in mountaineering, kayaking, climbing, and more for all abilities — from first-time taster days to professional leadership qualifications. It sits at the geographical heart of Snowdonia with residential accommodation on site.

About Plas y Brenin

Plas y Brenin — the King's House — has stood at Capel Curig since the coaching inn era, when it served travellers crossing the mountains between the north coast and the Llŷn Peninsula. In 1955, the building and its grounds were transformed into the National Mountaineering Centre, giving Wales a dedicated home for developing skill and safety in the hills. Seven decades later it remains one of the most respected outdoor education establishments in Europe, training everyone from nervous beginners to elite mountain guides.

The geographical position is the centre's greatest asset. Eryri's main mountain groups — the Snowdon massif, the Glyderau, the Carneddau, and Tryfan — radiate outward from Capel Curig like spokes from a hub. Within 30 minutes of the front door are rock faces ranging from gentle single-pitch slabs to serious multi-pitch routes, rivers covering the full spectrum of white-water grades, and ridges that demand everything from a good pair of boots to technical rope skills depending on conditions. The instructors at Plas y Brenin know this terrain with an intimacy that takes decades to accumulate.

Courses are structured around nationally recognised awards and qualifications, but the centre is deliberately accessible to beginners. A weekend introduction to mountaineering — or a taster session in kayaking on the lakes at the foot of Mynydd Moel — requires no prior experience and no specialised kit, and gives participants a measured, safe first encounter with terrain and conditions that might otherwise feel intimidating.
