About adventure activities in North Wales
The same mountains, quarries, rivers and coastline that shaped North Wales for centuries are now the canvas for some of Britain's most dramatic outdoor adventure experiences. Zip World has transformed the Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda into a world-class adventure attraction — the Velocity zip line at 100 mph is the fastest in the world, while Bounce Below converts the underground slate caverns at Llechwedd into a cathedral-sized trampoline park.
Adventure Parc at Dolgarrog opened in 2015 as Surf Snowdonia — the first inland surf lagoon in Europe — bringing consistent, learnable waves to landlocked Snowdonia; the lagoon has since closed and the site now runs indoor and outdoor activities under new ownership. Plas y Brenin — the National Mountain Sports Centre at Capel Curig — has been the starting point for countless mountaineering and kayaking careers since 1955.
Beyond the headline attractions, North Wales offers world-class sea kayaking around Anglesey's tidal races, gorge walking in Snowdonia's watercourses, canyoning in the Conwy Valley, coasteering from Rhoscolyn's quartzite cliffs, and mountain biking at the internationally renowned Coed y Brenin trails. The National White Water Centre near Bala offers whitewater kayaking and rafting on the Grade 4+ Tryweryn River (the Lee Valley was the 2012 Olympics kayak slalom venue — not Bala, as is sometimes mistakenly stated).

Booking and safety
Book in advance: Zip World Velocity and Bounce Below sell out weeks ahead in summer. Book directly on the operator's website. Zip World activities have weight, height and age restrictions — check before booking with children.
Guided activities: Coasteering, canyoning and white-water activities are only available with qualified instructors — never attempt alone. Look for operators with AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) licences and qualifications from Mountain Training UK or British Canoeing.
Frequently asked questions
Zip World Velocity at Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda is the world's fastest zip line, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph (160 km/h) on a 1.5-mile run 500 m above the quarry floor. Riders travel in a prone (Superman) position face-down. Minimum age 7 (and minimum weight/height requirements). Adult prices start around £60 per ride. Book well in advance — this is one of the most popular adventure attractions in Wales. Not suitable for those with heart conditions or vertigo.
Zip World Bounce Below is a network of underground trampolines inside the Llechwedd Slate Caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog — the world's first underground trampoline park. Participants bounce through four caverns connected by slides, nets and zip lines. Age 7+, height restrictions apply. Blaenau Ffestiniog also hosts Zip World Caverns, a separate extreme underground adventure.
No — the inland surf lagoon at Dolgarrog has closed. When it opened in 2015 as Surf Snowdonia it was Europe's first inland surf lagoon, using Wavegarden technology, but the lagoon closed in 2023. The wider site (rebranded Adventure Parc Snowdonia in 2019) passed through Zip World and, since 2025, is run by the Interesting Hotels Group as an indoor and outdoor activity centre — without the surf lagoon. Check adventureparc.co.uk for current activities.
Plas y Brenin is the National Mountain Sports Centre of Wales, based at Capel Curig in Snowdonia. It offers professionally instructed courses in mountaineering, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and skiing (in winter, on artificial slope). Courses range from single days to week-long residential programmes. The centre has on-site accommodation, restaurant and training facilities — an excellent base for a structured outdoor activity holiday.
Coasteering involves traversing sea cliffs, swimming in channels, jumping from rocks and exploring sea caves along a coastline — wearing a wetsuit and buoyancy aid, guided by qualified instructors. Anglesey is one of the best coasteering destinations in Britain, with dramatic quartzite cliffs and clear sea. Several companies operate guided coasteering sessions from Rhoscolyn, Treaddur Bay and South Stack. Minimum age typically 8 or 12.
The rivers and gorges of Snowdonia offer excellent canyoning and gorge walking. Popular venues include the Conwy Falls gorge near Betws-y-Coed, the Afon Glaslyn at Aberglaslyn Pass and various gorges in the Lledr Valley. Multiple outdoor activity companies in Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis offer guided half-day and full-day sessions. Typically suitable from age 8 with appropriate clothing and footwear provided.
