About Pili Palas
The name says it all: pili pala is Welsh for butterfly, and the butterfly house is the heart of this nature attraction at Menai Bridge. The tropical glasshouse contains free-flying butterflies from across the world — morpho butterflies from South America with their iridescent blue wings, owl butterflies with their remarkable eye-spot markings, and dozens of other species from Africa, Asia and the Americas. The warmth and humidity of the glasshouse, the flowers, and the butterflies drifting and landing everywhere give it an entirely different character from an outdoor wildlife experience.
The reptile and exotic animal area adds a handled encounter dimension. Staff bring snakes, lizards and other animals out for guided close contact — an experience that tends to divide opinion among adults but consistently fascinates children. The exhibits change and rotate, but species from the corn snake and bearded dragon families are regularly featured alongside less familiar invertebrates.
Pili Palas has established itself as one of the most dependable family attractions on Anglesey — compact enough to feel manageable, with enough to interest children for a full morning or afternoon, and sufficiently sheltered to be an excellent choice when the weather is unfavourable for the island's beaches and coastal paths.
