About Adventure Parc Snowdonia
Adventure Parc Snowdonia opened in August 2015 as Surf Snowdonia — the world's first purpose-built inland surfing lagoon. The facility was developed on the site of a former aluminium smelter at Dolgarrog in the Conwy Valley, using a then-novel wave-generation technology (the WAVEGARDEN Cove system) to produce consistent, controllable surfable waves in an entirely landlocked environment.
The lagoon is 300 metres long and generates waves from both ends simultaneously, producing two wave types: a longer, more powerful wave on one side for intermediate and advanced surfers, and a shorter, more forgiving wave on the other for beginners. Wave height and frequency are adjustable, allowing the operators to configure the pool for the ability level of each session. The result is a surfing environment that is both more consistent than the sea and genuinely appropriate for beginners who might otherwise find ocean surfing inaccessible.
The setting adds considerably to the experience. The Conwy Valley is a green glacial trough flanked by the mountains of Snowdonia — from the lagoon, the Carneddau range is visible to the west and the Denbigh Moors to the east. Surfing in neoprene while looking at snow-dusted mountains in February is a specifically North Welsh experience that no coastal venue can replicate.

Frequently asked questions
Adventure Parc Snowdonia (originally opened as Surf Snowdonia in 2015) is the world's first artificial inland surfing lagoon — a purpose-built wave pool in the Conwy Valley that generates consistent surfable waves regardless of weather or season. The lagoon uses a patented wave-generation technology to produce waves suitable for beginners through to experienced surfers, all controllable in height and frequency. It is set against a backdrop of Snowdonia mountains in a repurposed industrial site at Dolgarrog.
No — the lagoon caters to all ability levels, from complete beginners to professional surfers. Sessions are divided by ability: beginner sessions use smaller waves with full instructor support (no prior experience needed); intermediate sessions require basic surfing ability; advanced sessions use the largest waves for experienced surfers. Surfboards, wetsuits and all equipment are included in the session price. Surf lessons are available for first-timers.
Standard surf sessions are typically 1 hour of water time. Beginner sessions include a pre-water lesson on land as well as the pool session. Allow additional time for changing, kit fitting and the obligatory post-surf café visit. The site has a full café, changing facilities and a spectator area overlooking the lagoon — non-surfing companions can watch from the bank for free.
Yes — one of the key advantages of an inland wave pool over a beach is year-round consistency. Adventure Parc Snowdonia operates throughout the year. Winter surfing in a wetsuit with Snowdonia mountains snow-capped behind the lagoon is a genuinely striking experience. Demand is lower in winter, which can mean easier booking and a quieter lagoon.
Adventure Parc Snowdonia is at Dolgarrog in the Conwy Valley, approximately 8 miles south of Conwy town. Use postcode LL32 8QE. From the A55, take the B5106 south through Glan Conwy to Dolgarrog. Free parking is available on site. By public transport, Tal-y-Cafn station on the Conwy Valley railway line is 2 miles from the site — the nearest practical option without a car.
Yes — children aged 6 and over can participate in beginner surf sessions with instructor support. The lagoon's controlled wave environment is significantly safer for children than open-sea surfing. The spectator area and café make it a good option for groups where some participants will be watching rather than surfing. The site also has other activities including axe-throwing, segway tours and a ninja warrior-style obstacle course for non-surfers.
