About Plas Menai
Plas Menai is one of the UK's leading outdoor activity centres, developed by Sport Wales as the National Outdoor Centre of Wales. Its position on the Menai Strait — the tidal channel between the island of Ynys Môn (Anglesey) and the Welsh mainland — gives it direct access to one of the most interesting waterways in Britain: a channel where tidal currents, sheltered sections, and exposure to Atlantic weather create an environment that challenges and rewards sailors, kayakers and other paddlers at all levels.
The centre has been a training ground for Welsh and British Olympic and Paralympic watersports athletes as well as an accessible venue for first-time sailors and casual visitors. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualification framework runs from beginner to instructor level, and Plas Menai is an RYA-recognised training centre for multiple disciplines. The combination of professional instruction, quality equipment and an outstanding natural setting has made it one of the premier outdoor learning centres in Wales.
The Menai Strait setting provides not only excellent water conditions but one of the most dramatic outdoor backdrops in Wales. Caernarfon Castle — the great Edwardian fortress — is visible from the strait to the south. Snowdonia fills the eastern skyline. Anglesey stretches to the north and west. Sailing through the narrows of the strait with this landscape on all sides is an experience that few other watersports centres can replicate.
